Patrick Alan Banfield

Video and installation

Patrick Alan Banfield is a Berlin-based video artist. He has been working with visual designer Nicolas C. Geissler at neuzeit Filmagentur for over 17 years: in addition to video art and experimental as well as somewhat more classic documentary films, he directs commercials and also produces video art and feature films for other filmmakers.

Much of his work deals with masculinity and self-awareness, whereby he intuitively moves in a field between scientific categorisation and emotional subjectivity. In his work, Banfield moves in an elusive space between reality and fiction. He is interested in the construction of narratives, in particular how stories change when the levels are ambivalent in their perceived authenticity, such as in the film-within-a-film narrative.

Patrick is currently a fellow of the Hessian Cultural Foundation with his project SOYBOY, which examines the cultural struggle in the USA for the interpretative sovereignty of gender roles, which also includes (toxic) masculinity. His works have been shown at the Berlin Biennale, the Museum für Moderne Kunst in Frankfurt am Main, the Museum für Neue Kunst in Freiburg im Breisgau, the MEWO Kunsthalle in Memmingen, the Palazzo Strozzi in Florence, the Yeltsin Centre in Yekaterinburg and the Kunsthaus Wiesbaden, among others.
