Introducing: Verena Schmidt

Portrait of the artist Verena Schmidt in front of a black background.

Verena Schmidt grew up in Berlin and Wiesbaden, studying at the Berlin University of the Arts from 2008 to 2013. In 2014, she enrolled on the Master's programme under Pia Fries. She undertook international work placements at Emily Carr University in Vancouver, as well as residencies and symposia in Italy, Norway, Sweden and South Korea. In 2011, she participated in the German-Japanese Contemporary Art Exhibition in Tokyo. This was followed by exhibitions at the Leipziger Baumwollspinnerei, the Georg Kolbe Museum, the Nassauischer Kunstverein Wiesbaden and Apartment Neunzehn, to name a few. She has lived and worked in Wiesbaden since 2017, moving into her studio at the Walkmühle artists' association in 2020.

Schmidt's work encompasses sculpture, installation, and intervention. Her sculptures and object arrangements — "things" — developed from a wide variety of materials, react sensitively to space, context and viewers. Material illusions, found objects, and geological forms intertwine to create compositions that are simultaneously unsettling and poetic. Often processual and changeable, her works transform spaces and question perception, order, and value. Schmidt's installations encourage us to constantly reconsider our view of everyday and cultural life — openly, humorously, and with an eye to the future.

At ato, the artist is represented by Lea Grosz.

Uli Aigner transforms the ancient craft of porcelain production into a space for experimentation, self-reflection and questioning the world. In her work, the vessel becomes a space for contemplation, with themes such as origin, socialisation, technology, use, networks of relationships and power structures hidden within each container. Our author, Henriette Hufgard, met with the artist.

It's a cliché that artists don't like to talk about their work. In our series, however, we ask them anyway. This time, it's Hannah Cooke's turn.

Exhibitions by artists from the ato network

ato's art network consists of a large number of artists and art agents. They are regularly invited to exhibitions or organise their own artistic interventions and public exhibition formats.

We present the current events from our network in our calendar. We cordially invite you to drop by!

As many people come from Karlsruhe or Berlin, a current exhibition can often be discovered in both cities. But of course also in other places.

Karlsruhe and Berlin have very different art scenes, which we are happy to inform you about. If you are interested, you can find more information here:
