Paloma Wolff
In her paintings the interaction between the human and the nonhuman, so what does not present human features, may suggest the gradual creation of a so-called "sympoiesis", "a complex, dynamic, responsive, situated, historical system [...], a word for being-with-the-world, in society [...] that collectively produces systems that have no self-defined spatial or temporal boundaries." (Haraway 2016, 58-61). Schoenaich's works can be understood as such systems: her protagonists are not bound to a specific time or space but move - albeit hesitantly - between the present and many different pasts, or possibly in a different time and space unknown to us.
“Elsewhere is a negative mirror. The traveller recognizes the little that is his, discovering the much he has not had and will have” once wrote Italo Calvino in his novel “Invisible Cities” (1978 [1972], 29). We are the travellers wandering elsewhere in Schoenaich’s paintings and discovering the much we have not had and will have.
