Ada vs. Emin
Tracey Emin in an interview:
“Having children and being a mother... It would be a compromise to be an artist at the same time. I know some women can. But that's not the kind of artist I aspire to be. There are good artists that have children. Of course there are. They are called men. It's hard for women. It's really difficult, they are emotionally torn. It's hard enough for me with my cat.”
The photograph was taken to accompany the video work Ada vs. Emin and shows me breastfeeding my daughter Ada in an exhibition-like setting. We are sitting on an unmade bed, surrounded by vodka bottles, contraceptives, cigarettes, dirt and garbage. Every detail gives the impression that we are sitting in the work “MyBed” by Tracey Emin. Ada vs. Emin is intended as a positive counter-statement to Emin's condescending commentary.
