Session 4 - Nemanja Šarbajić

Vernissage: 16.11.2024, 18.00 h

Electric Eel

Werderstraße 35, 76137 Karlsruhe

Wed - Fri: 17:00 - 22:00

Sat + Sun: 15:00 - 22:00

The fourth edition of Session shows freshly unearthed works by artist Nemanja Šarbajić (represented at ato by Norina Quinte).

For weeks and months, Šarbajić “buried canvases” are exposed to wind, rain, soil and insects. They absorb traces of their surroundings - soil, plant remains and even odors - and begin to decompose in some places. These traces emerge as living, organic “scars” on the canvases, making each canvas a unique testimony to its location and the conditions prevailing there. The titles of the works tell us viewers where they were created and show how the nature of the soil shapes the transformation.

The artistic process does not end with the excavation, but continues when the cloths are hung outside and exposed to the forces of nature once again. Sun, wind and rain continue to change colors and textures and emphasize the element of transience. Only later are they stretched on stretcher frames.

Šarbajić's chosen method stands in stark contrast to traditional painting, in which the artist retains control over the composition. Here, nature paints itself and unpredictable changes determine the final work. His work is not only an aesthetic and conceptual project, but also a philosophical one: an exploration of the transience of life and art, inevitable change and the forces of nature.
