What art can I experience in Berlin?
If you are interested in contemporary art, Berlin is the place to be. But not only that: Modern classics can also be admired in Berlin's museums, such as the Neue Nationalgalerie on Potsdamer Platz.
Berlin is a magnet for artists from all over the world and this is also reflected in the cityscape. There are only a few German cities where you can find comparable street art: In Kreuzberg, Friedrichshain and Prenzlauerberg in particular, you can always find impressive paintings and lettering on the walls of houses, in gateways or, of course, the East Side Gallery on the Spree.
What does the young art scene in Berlin look like?
The University of the Arts Berlin and the Weißensee School of Art attract young people to Berlin to study art. Even though there are no longer as many vacant spaces as there were 10-20 years ago, off-spaces and pop-up exhibitions are constantly opening in temporary locations. Some have to give way again after a short time. The Sellerie Weekend, which takes place parallel to the Berlin Gallery Weekend, is a good place to get to know Berlin's artistic off-scene.
How did Berlin's art scene develop?
In the 1990s, after the fall of the Berlin Wall, Berlin established itself as a city of young, up-and-coming galleries. Initially, most of these were located in Mitte around Auguststrasse and Linienstrasse. Nowadays, internationally renowned galleries such as Neugerriemschneider and Sprüth-Magers can be found here. In recent years, many galleries have moved to Potsdamer Strasse in Schöneberg - for example Esther Schipper and Tanja Wagner. The nearby Victoria Bar has become a meeting point for the art scene. Charlottenburg is also home to a number of important galleries, although the area around Fasanenstraße is a center for high-priced art auction houses that deal with the resale of artworks (secondary market).
Museums naturally play an important role in the Berlin art scene. When it comes to contemporary art, the Hamburger Bahnhof is probably the most renowned museum in Berlin. But the Martin-Gropius-Bau is also characterized by exciting exhibitions that often have a very contemporary focus. The Neue Museum and the Bodemuseum are located around the Museum Island. Both are great places to immerse yourself in the history of art and antiquity.

We show art by artists represented by ato in unusual and constantly changing locations. In the past, we have already been able to realize a large number of exhibitions in Berlin. These include the exhibition "On/Off - Questions of Timing" at SchauFenster Berlin, "Remiserable. Eine Ausstellung vor dem Abriss" in a remise threatened by demolition or the double exhibition "Kegelmann trifft Von Silberland. on/off - Questions of Timing

Visitors to the exhibition were invited to follow a 60-minute cycle: Instead of a simultaneous show of works, "on/off - Questions of Timing" allowed visitors to view the individual works one after the other. This deliberate restriction of what was shown influenced the art experience, continuously changing the mood in the interior and exterior space and refusing conventional sensory overload.
Culinary intervention

As a special highlight of the exhibition "Never take Candy from strangers", ato artist and founder of pars pralinen Kristiane Kegelmann responded to the works of VON SILBERLAND in a culinary, artistic intervention.
The 5-course menu, which was presented performatively, played with the classic norms and procedures of a dinner and responded to the exhibition title "Never take Candy from strangers".
Never take Candy from strangers

For this exhibition, ato artist Von Silberland transferred manual drawings into digital visual worlds. The title "Never take Candy from strangers" is based on childhood memories of the artist, who grew up in Argentina, and forms the starting point of his formal language.
The exhibition took place on the top floor of a former substation (Kreativzentrum Christiania e.V.) in Berlin Wedding.
Demonstration and artistic intervention

As part of the Women in Architecture Festival 2021, the Marlene Poelzig Initiative invited people to a demonstration in front of the Marlene Poelzig House, which is in a state of decay. Members of the initiative gave impulses about Marlene Poelzig, the history of the house, planned events and the planned residency program. As an artistic intervention, a specially created work by ato artist Hannah Cooke was unveiled to pay tribute to Marlene Poelzig.
